The Dane County Friends of Ferals (DCFoF) participated in World Spay Day 2014, an annual campaign of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Humane Society International (HSI), on February 8, 2014 at Madison College in Madison, WI. Launched in 1995, the campaign aims to encourage people to save animal lives by spaying and neutering companion animals and feral cats. The "day" itself is celebrated annually on the fourth Tuesday in February, but World Spay Day events and/or activities take place anytime throughout the month of February, which is recognized as Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. For the fourth year in a row, the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA) sponsored the DCFoF event at Madison College-resulting in the sterilization of 90 cats (53 spays and 37 neuters)! This event was made possible by the compassionate heart of numerous volunteers: 9 veterinarians, 8 veterinary technicians, 13 veterinary students from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, 25 veterinary technician students from Madison College and Globe University, and 10 community members. Not only were cats sterilized, the educational experience for the students-the future of veterinary medicine-was priceless!
